Alienation

Hi, I'm not certain about the meaning of the word alienation, so I would appreciate some clarification.

Does alienation between someone necessarily has to do with one or both of the parties having been unfriendly toward each other or could it just be that they have been apart for a while and therefore things aren't as natural between them now as they were before?

So alienation between someone could also translate simply just as distance between someone?
