I am currently studying an Alevel in English Literature and have been given an essay to do on the 'The Oval Portrait'. I specifically want to discuss how Edgar Allen Poe portrays his thoughts on 'The New Woman' (a symbol of changing gender norms within the late nineteenth century) and the 'Ideal Woman' (expected to be Angelic in that she would provide a safe and loving home, obedient in that she obeys everything her husband says and a chattel, giving everything to her husband) I am finding this quite difficult and would be very grateful for any help I could get, thanks
