ALERT

Awaiting police conference on capture of Nicholas Sheler

Hi,
I ran across the above on FoxNews, and I'm not very sure of its meaning, espicially ALERT. Does "ALERT" in the above refer to "warning" or "Breaking news?" Your help!!! Thanks.

Thanks, Clive.

Now I get it.
By the way, how should I understand "awaiting" in the base sentence?

Best regards,
