Alcohol

Hello my friends!! Is this okay (I am editing something for a friend, his English is even worse than mine):

Yes, Mario was a terrible drinker. It was well known he had been having a drinking problem. It was so bad that by the end of that decade, alcohol had ruined his face, body.

Alcohol? Or the alcohol? I go with alcohol. Alcohol has already been mentioned, but it still remains alcohol on a general level. Not a particular type of alcohol (that he consumed on a certain night or at a party), but alcohol in general that ruined his face.

I think: either "alcohol" or "all the alcohol [he had been consuming]". But better not "the alcohol".

What do you think?!
