air conditioner/air conditioning

Please help me.

I can't decide which word is correct. I think they are the same.Please explain.

"Despite the time of the year, yesterday 's temperature was enough hot to turn on the air conditioning/air conditioner.

either one - the air conditioner is the machine itself. Air conditioning is the system used to cool the air. If I have one of those boxes in my window, I have an air conditioner. If I have this thing in my basement that connects to vents throughout my house, I have central air conditioning.

air conditioner is the machine
air conditioning is the functionality

You might say that someone who has an air conditioner in the window, but not a central cooling system, still has air conditioning.
