I am a brazilian studying for a Cambridge CPE and now and again I pick up a few freelance jobs doing translations and general english proof reading. Anyways, I picked job last night that involved correcting the grammar in a business document (written by a brazilian, so portuguese native) and in one of the pages I stumbled upon a phrase that was kinda off. Due to time constraints and general sleepiness (and a little deep seated desire to try and preserve some of the original author's style) instead of completely rewriting it I just messed with the order of the words and ended up with:
"This BENCHMARKING aims to the conception of wireframes for the project..."
which I will be the first to admit isn't a very stylish way to convey the goal of said project, but still adequate enough. Or so I thought. The final client, an english native, argued that the phrase was wrong and corrected it to:
"This BENCHMARKING is aimed at aiding in the conception of wireframes..."
Again, I will be the first to admit his version is a lot better, but my question actually is: was the first version so off the mark with glaring grammatical errors, or is it mostly a style debacle? I feel there is something off about the whole thing, but can't quite put my finger on it. Is it the way "conception" is used?
Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Oh well, that is probably my portuguese infecting the phrase. "Conception" sounds like and shares some of the meaning of "Concepção", but I think what I actually meant by that phrase was something like "to conceive".
The document being refered to is something of a benchmarking report, which will be used as a guiding light to steer the proccess of creating said wire frames.
So I guess I could say they (the wire frames) are being conceived.
But I already see the error in my ways. Thanks for the help
