"aim to do something" synonym

Hi.

Simultaneously, the family aims to instill discipline and ambition in the child.

Can I replace 'aims to' with 'is supposed to' with no even subtle change in meaning?

Thanks in advance.

Thank you very much my dear teacher.

Would you please give me a synonym (at least the closet) of the phrase 'aims to' ?
