AIDS

I'm working on a book for Zimbabwe and the author has used Aids to refer to the disease. Should it not be AIDS, all caps? Or are we now more lax with it and consider Aids correct?

Sorry to repeat, earlier question went up as anonymous. I'm working on a book where the author refers to the illness as Aids, but shouldn't it be AIDS in all caps? Or are we now okay with 'Aids'?

In my opinion "AIDS" is much preferable. Looking at recent usage in Google News search, the great majority of writers use all caps, with just one or two instances of "Aids".

Scuba, laser and radar spring to mind. Since aids has a meaning of its own, it is to be hoped that AIDS will be eliminated before it routinely becomes Aids or aids.
