What is the difference between 'assist' and 'aid'?

We'll do all we can to assist you.
We will assist you in finding somewhere to live.

I myself would keep 'assist' in all sentences where it appears and replace 'aid' with 'assist' where 'aid' appears. The 'in' seems more natural to me.
