AHHH, what is this word?!

I keep wanting to say "succumb," but that's not it.

When someone has been the victim of something, like imposed upon. For example, "Women have been _____ by (to?) the expectations of society for centuries."

Any ideas? I'd appreciate it so much!

At a guess, maybe this will do the trick: Women have fallen victim to the expectations of society. I guess "succumb" is used this way: She fought her drug addiction for the better part of her life but finally succumbed to it. e.
