Have you ever heard anyone use ahead of time or beforehand?

Could you tell me how you would phrase the following as I'm not sure with ahead and in advance?

This song was written a few decades ago but is still of our generation. It isn't old in its style. It's up to date. When it was written it was ahead of its t

"ahead of its time" has a more specific meaning than "ahead of time". It means that something was very advanced in its style, concept, design, etc., given the date when it was created. Your example is typical.
