Agreement..

Could someone advise on the agreement question below, thanks.

Unexpectedly, stood in front of her was/were a bunch of childhood friends.

Unexpectedly, stood in front of her was/were a party of childhood friends.

Theoretically, i suppose was is the answer but somewhat feel were sounds with more sanity.

All sentences are badly ungrammatical. My suggestion: A bunch of childhood friends unexpectedly stood in front of her. Or: A bunch of childhood friends were unexpectedly standing in front of her.

I don't have a clue as to what you are trying to say with the last sentence.
