Agreement

Hi,

I think I just stepped in it.

There are cars whose color is distracting to other drivers.

There are cars the color of which is etc.

Is number agreement mandatory here?

There are cars whose colors are distracting to other drivers.

The first one is fine to me.
The second one describes the cars that are in our annual low-rider parade. They are garishly painted with many different colors, and certainly are distracting!
