Agree?

Do you agree with the comma placement - outside the quotes - in each of these examples?

She asked, "You did what?", trying to make him feel guilty.

She shouted, "Come back!", as if he were finally ready to listen to reason.

If she says, "I like you", "I had fun", "You're sweet!", or "Shall we dance?", pay attention.

When I first heard the Beatles' song " Help!", I fell in love with it.
---And would the apostrophe follow 'Beatles' here to denote the possessive, or no apostrophe because it could be a descriptive?

Top answer

Yes, except I personally wouldn't use a comma in the last sentence. No apostrophe.

Omit comma after 'says', you mean?

If so, why?

If I thought it was I wouldn't have said “personally”. It's optional.

Without rewording, how would you personally handle the possessive of a title in quote marks, specifically a song title?

eg

"Help!"'s mellifluous, instrumental melodies were phenomenal.

Or

"Help!" 's mellifluous, instrumental melodies were phenomenal.

Both are hideous, but the first one.

This looks slightly better:

“Helps!”’s

Incorrect.

The song is titled 'Help!', not 'Helps!'.

I believe you meant “Help!”’s

While it is common practice, I have personally never understood the logic behind or the reason for commas such as you have aft
