Ago/before

Why didn't you go to his birthday party last month?

1. Because we'd had a falling out 1 month before

2. Because we had a falling out 2 months ago.

First of all, are both of these correct grammatically?
Second, if I wish to use "2 months ago", do I have to use the past simple or can I say "Because we'd had a falling out 2 months ago"? It doesn't sound right to me because of "ago".
