Vocabulary

aggressive

Hello everyone,

I'm not quite sure about the word aggressive. In the dictionary it says "having or showing determination and energetic pursuit of your ends; "an aggressive businessman"; "an aggressive basketball player"; "he was aggressive and imperious; positive in his convictions"; "aggressive drivers"

However, I don't know why I feel not right when it's used to give sincere praise to someone. Is it a quite positve word? Do you use it to praise an employee and say "He is such an aggressive young man. I'll sure give him a raise."

Thank you!

No, it is not really seen as a positive praisable trait except, perhaps, in sport.

Thank you Nona for your note. In that light, is the following sentence acceptable? Does it convey a meaning that the business world is rather competitive?

"A successful businessman has to be aggressive."

Thanks again.

0It still has negative feelings. Try "has to be a go-getter" or "has to be assertive," which is a less "rude" trait than aggressive.0-
