He is ten years old
or
He is ten year old

Why do people use 'year old' such as, "That ten year old is annoying" when ten is obviously plural?

It actually should be "He is a ten-year-old."

And that's just what we do.

It's a 3-mile drive. He served a 15-year sentence. She paid a 200-dollar fine. It's a fifteen-minute walk.

You use the singular with a number before the noun.
