Agassi threw his racquet on/to the ground in anger.

Hello.

1) Agassi threw his racquet on the ground in anger.
2) Agassi threw his racquet to the ground in anger.

What is the difference between the above sentences? Are both grammatically correct? If they are, then my first guess would be that the first one emphasizes the fact that the racquet landed on the ground, while the second one emphasizes the direction of movement.
