Agape "Adverb" ?

She was astounded and was staring agape at the mouth-watering strawberry.

As far as I know, "agape" is not an adverb. Is it placed correctly in this sentence?

Can I edit it like this --> Harriet was astounded, her mouth agape with incredulousness, staring at the mouth-watering strawberry.
