Again

1-I paid him again.

I thought this could only mean:
I paid him one more time.

but The American Heritage Dictionary states:

"In return, in response"

as one of the meanings of "again" and quotes the above sentence as an example of that usage.

Could "1" mean "I paid him in return (for something he had done or given me) in modern English?
