Grammar

after * years / for the first time in * years

I met her again after 12 years.
I saw her for the first time in 12 years.

Are these 2 sentences correct? And if so, are they interchangeable?

Thank you.

Top answer

” This tells us that you met her before, 12 years ago. ” This says only that you haven’t seen her in 12 years. The second doesn’t tell if you ever actually met or spoke to her even.

  • ” This tells us that you met her before, 12 years ago.
  • ” This says only that you haven’t seen her in 12 years.
  • The second doesn’t tell if you ever actually met or spoke to her even.
  • So they are not interchangeable.
