after vs. then

I need to ask you something that confuses me...
I'd like to know if it is right!

after -> anything except time???
After breakfast, then I went to school.

then -> for time
I had breakfast, then I went to school.

Or maybe it is something else completely different than what I said...

after -> anything except time???

then -> for time


I'm not quite sure what you're asking.

"After breakfast I went to school" is fine -- you don't need "then" when you use "after."

"I had breakfast, then I went to school" -- also fine.

Sorry, I have just realized is not clear at all... Let me do it better!

I'd like to know if there is any rule for using "then" and "after".
It sounds strange because of my native language, Portuguese...
