Both of those sentences are OK. #1 is more commonly said.

I like to retrict 'usage', as in "English usage", to the sense of "popular use that creates a convention".
To me 'usage' instead of 'use' in a general sense is pretentious. I also object to 'signage'.

Correct and convention are different. All of these could be considered correct; but, in the end, the most appropriate way to express this statement is:

Please, return it after using it.

If you re talking bout a sign, pretty standard wording is
