after the Cold War the Soviet Union is ...

I would like to ask a special verb about some countries such as the Soviet Union or Yugoslavia. It's like "to scatter" or "to dissolve". Probably that verb should exist. That verb implies that the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia divided into small countries. What would be that verb?
