After that & Afterwards

Which of the following sentences is correct?

1) I had dinner and after that, I went to Pisa.

2) I had dinner and afterwards, I went to Pisa.

If both are possible, do they mean the same thing?

If so, which would you use?

With regard to punctuation, is it correct to use a comma after "after that" and "afterwards" in the above sentences?

Thank you.
