after comma shortened forms

could you tell me the meaning of the parts below coming after commas

We spent lots of time to get out of the forest ,completely exhausted and in need of something fresh to drink

We arrived at the plaza late ,causing the boss to be angry.

how can I translate the second part of the sentences(after comma parts)

"We spent lots of time to ..." is not very natural for me, and the two parts of the sentence do not connect particularly well, in my opinion.
