AFrica

I've already left Africa about a couple months ago for New York.

A friend asks me, where have I been the past few years and I reply with:

I've been in Africa for the past 3 years. Just recently got back to the US.

Or should it be

I was in Africa for the past 3 years. Just recently got back to the US.

Which is better?

Thank you.
