Afraid of/to

-I am afraid of telling him the truth lest it should dampen his spirits.

Dictionaries say that if afraid means worried, you could use afraid of sth/to do sth; but I think they are not interchangeable all the time, and for example, do you think using afraid to tell would be wrong?
