Afford with gerund

Hi

Could you please tell me if the verb afford could be used with a gerund--I mean, is this sentence wrong or just odd?

I couldn't afford travelling by air.

Or
I can't afford risking all the money I have.

It sounds 'off' to me. I'd use the infinitive.
