Affirm

Both sides affirmed their commitment to the ceasefire.


Google says the root meaning of affirm something is to make something firm and that does make sense to me. It means the above sentence means both sides made their commitment firm to the ceasefire. To make something firm can also be understood as to support something strongly. Does ‘affirm’ mean to make firm?
