Affect vs effect

I recently wrote a question - Commercials, is there a single commercial you saw in 2019 that effected your life?

Affect and effect still give me grief, can you please let me know how to decipher between the two?

This is one rule I found but I still am uncertain as to whether I chose the right one:

Another trick is to remember that affect comes first alphabetically, and an action (to affect) has to occur before you can have a result (an effect).

Thank you for your help!
