Affair

An affair outside of marriage is called an extramarital affair. But what should we call the affair which is just outside of an existing relationship but not outside of marriage ?

If you have a girlfriend/boyfriend but seeing (romantically) someone else then you're cheating on your girlfriend/boyfriend. I wouldn't call it "an affair" even though it's possible (according to my dictionary)
