Afar/further away

1. Is this sentence correct:

"From the window, I glimpsed something afar, with vibrant colours, and sparkling in the light."

2. Does 'afar' mean very far away, or could also mean relatively short distance?

While, would the same also be correct if written as (and does it mean the same as above):

"From the window, I glimpsed something further away, with vibrant colours, and sparkling in the light."
