Aegis

Hi,

One usually says ".....under aegis of the United States." Can one also says "......under American aegis"?

I don't remember ever hearing or reading 'under aegis of . . . '. It's always 'under the aegis of .. . . '.
It's pretty well a fixed expression, so 'under American aegis' sounds quite odd to me.

The missing 'the' was an accidental omission.

As for "under American aegis," I felt and (still feel) the same as you do and that's why i asked.
