Aegis

Hi,

One usually says ".....under aegis of the United States." Can one also says "......under American aegis"?

under American aegis"? One can, and one often does, but our friends in Canada, Mexico, Argentina, and Chile, to name a few, may take issue, saying that they, too, are Americans. CJ

I don't remember ever hearing or reading 'under aegis of . . . '. It's always 'under the aegis of .. . . '.
It's pretty well a fixed expression, so 'under American aegis' sounds quite odd to me.

The missing 'the' was an accidental omission.

As for "under American aegis," I felt and (still feel) the same as you do and that's why i asked.
