AE Roof with a sort or long o!!??

I've been an ESL speaker since over 20 years, but just today heard the pronounciation of roof as [ruf] ("rough") .. I was as surprised as when I heard sword left out the 'w'. We always learn BE in school (in europe) and then it's [r?f].

How common is this in AE? And how do you say it? Pl also add which area/city you're from.
