Advice needed... 3y learning ENG and no progrewss
Hello folks,
I'm going through a very weird situation and I need your advice.
My filipina gf has been learning English for 3 years and I don't notice any improvement.
She's 38 y.o. and has finished her medical school in 1990. Then she worked locally as ER doctor for 5y and after that she went to work abroad in China at a company that develops drugs for 2y. When she met a filipino businessman, she decided to follow him and come back to the Phil to live with him.
He wanted her to stay at home as a housewife.
When they broke up 4y ago, I met her on a datingsite. Ofcourse we've met in real several times later.
Our next move is to get here over here to Germany. I thought it would be a easier for her to learn German if she has gt a good English backgroud. Also a kind of warm-up for the course German later on.
She's read a very popular american grammar book. Now reading a very popular british grammar book. Both are from famous univ's, for beginners, have plenty of examples and exercises.
I've hired two online mentors for her, but they quited after a couple of lessons.
Also I suppose to point out her mistakes at texting (as I'm in Germany and she's still in th Phil)
Let me give you an idea of her mistakes:
I: hi babe, how are you ?
She: good. I went to a birthday next week
I: you already been there ? or not yet ?
She: not went yet
!: then, "went" is wrong. Please, correct it according the books
She: huh ?!

I: hi babe, what are you doing now ? can we talk ?
She: I help my mam wash the dishes
I: what ?! now ? or soon ?
She: now
I: please, correct the verb tense.
She: it's now, in the present, right ?
I: No, it's the present continous. The simple present tense is for something else. We've talked about this many times
She: I don't know

I: Hi babe, how was the wedding yesterday ?
She: Cosy. I take many pictures for the bride and broom.
I: it's "took".. in the past. And "pictures of/with"
She: yeah, a picture for me and for it together.
!: it ?!
She: what's wrong ?
I: let's focus on the verb "take" first. please, look at your first line and find out the mistake
She: you say "take" and i say "take". What's the problem ?!
I said "took". Look in the books. There are examples about this verb. I still remember that.
She: I don't understand you.

Hugo123 I've been struggling with her 4y She is obviously very intelligent and capable of learning fluent English. I can think of two causes for your struggle: 1) she is not sufficiently motivated to improve, and 2) she lacks the time necessary to devote to intensive study due to other commitments. WIthout knowing the root cause, and addressing it, you will continue in frustration.
