In meetings with PR people, they have used terms like "target audience", "end user", "potential purchasers". It has to be remembered that advertising is aimed at those people who have probably not yet purchased the product, and there really isn't a single word for that, except this neologism "advertisee". It will be interesting to see how long it is before it has become the accepted term.

Advertisee does seem to be gathering support in management speak for the person at whom the advertising is aimed. It is still not found in the dictionaries, and I rather wonder if your one 19th century dictionary had in fact a type mistake.

According to the definition you found, the advertisee is the end audience for the ad - the people who see/hear it. It's nothing to do with the companies that provide advertising space.
Just take our word for it (and I've worked in marketing), advertisee is not really used in your sense. We talk of audience, viewers, etc.
