Adverbs: Superlative degree

Dear users, I need your help! Found the following examples:

1) The dart came closest to the target on the third try.
2) The horse trotted most rapidly at the finish line.
3) The band played the most jazzily in the last set.

I've thought that logically "the" is not used with the superlative form of adverbs. But as you see , there is the definite article in #3. So the question is when it is necessary to use "the" with the superlative degree of adverbs. Thank you for your advice in advance:)

Anonymous So the question is when it is necessary to use "the" with the superlative degree of adverbs. It is usually optional: He can run [the] fastest. Without the article sentence #3 would be ambiguous.
