Adverbial Phrases

I came across this sentence in a novel, which I’ve been reading, “Though we have not known him long, he is no stranger in this part of the world.”

I want to know if the meaning of the sentence remain unchanged if the preposition ‘for’ is added before ‘long’.

Aspara Gus, thanks for the explanation.

I met Mary Jane at Tom’s birthday party last year.
Does the verb ‘meet’ indicate single occurrence with no exception?

Does it mean that when I see her for the second time, the third time and so on, ‘see’ would be the right verb to use instead of ‘meet’?

To become acquainted with is only one definition of meet. You can certainly meet someone you already know, usually at an agreed time or place: I’m going to meet Mary Jane tomorrow at the market. Meeting wouldn’t work in your other sentence with seeing, which means dating.
