Adverbial clauses of manner with main-clause linking verbs

In the sentence "Roger looks as though he has a cold," the last six words are the dependent clause, but is "Roger looks" therefore the independent clause? It could not stand by itself as a sentence; thus, how could it be an independent clause? This looks like a two-clause sentence with no independent clause. How do you explain this to a student?

The writing is a bit choppy, but all are perfectly good sentences.
