Adverbial clause

Simply because they are genetically engineered does not make a plant any more likely for to be an invasive or persistent weed, according to a decade-long study published in the journal Nature.

Can adverbial clause be used as subject of the sentence...stumped never seen it before? Can someone shed lights into it?
