Adverb result clause

They were exhausted to the point that they fell asleep the instant their head touched their pillows.

vs.

They were so exhausted that they fell asleep the instant their head touched their pillows.

The questions are:

so and such in adverb clauses of result are not necessary?

"that" is the sub conj in the clause (so and such only modify the adj or noun of the independent clause?)

Your question is clear? Can you rephrase them, please? However I can tell one thing: 'so' modifies the adjective exhausted.

On the web, many sources say "so...that" "such...that" is the subordinate conjunction for the adverb clause of result.

but it seems "that" alone works as the subordinate conj. and "so/such" are not always necessary. (is this right?)

so/such -> modify the adj?

that -> the subordinate conj.

Let me know whether this explanation is relevant to your question:

Sheeba said that she was alright.
Sheeba spoke so softly that noone could hear.
In the first sentence ( complex) that is the conjunction and with regard to the clause, it is a noun clause.

In the second sentence ( complex) so..that is the conjunction and the clause is the adverb clause of degree.

"So" and "such" are not usually necessary, but they make it clear that the one thing has followed on from the other...

vs I was so tired - I fell asleep

It was a heavy load - I couldn't lift it

vs It was such a heavy load - I couldn't lift it

So and such are used here to say that the fi

Hi

I've just realised the point of your second question

"That" isn't really necessary either...

I was so tired that I fell asleep

vs I was tired - I fell asleep

The second is more conversational - but OK
