Adverb frequency--singular or plural?

Hi everyone,

Which one of these two sentences is correct?

1)I gave my boyfriend a kiss often.

Or

2) I gave my boyfriend kisses often.

"I gave my boyfriend a kiss / kisses often" tends to seem like an answer to "How frequently did you kiss your boyfriend?". If that isn't the intention, it may be better to say "I often gave my boyfriend a kiss / kisses".
