Adverb and adjective comparison

which is the correct answer?

His answer came __ lightning.

  a. as quick as

b. as quickly as

Someone told me the answer is (A), although i felt the answer is (B) since the word before "as...as" is a verb.

I argued that if the sentence was His answer was __ lightning then the answer must be (A).

Am i wrong?

another question:

Cbsteh,

I'm quite interested if you tell me why we should choose Adverb?

Thanks in advance for your replay

A ) is not the correct answer for the first question. Please note, verb to be (is, are, been etc) are also verbs. But they can take adjective as well as some adverbs. i.e.1) Brand A flu medicine is just as affective as brand B but for half the price 2) Bruce Lee’s feet were just as fast as his fists.

But if we use action verbs to describe the same sentences, we may say: 1) Bra

So activity verb like study, play....etc, We will use adverb in the comparative, Right?

You got it!
But there are expressions that don't seem to follow this rule.

He works hard -ok
He is as hard working as his father. - ok
He works as hard and fast as Mary - ok
But"hard and fast " are functioning as adverb here not adjective.
