adverb? adjective

Color adds beauty to our lives, but it does more than that. Color serves important signaling functions, both natural and contrived by humans.

"..., both naturally and contrived by humans" sounds better to me.
Apart from that the structure is still unfamiliar to me.
Is something omitted?
