Question

I wanted originally do my MS Thesis in spring 2012 at berkeley university in Topology Optimization and I have an agreement with the corresponding professor to do my MS Thesis in the spring 2012. Nevertheless since I had just one course during my master study about optimization I would like to attend some more elective courses in this direction and get more informed in order to do a better job at berkley university. Because of this I would need one more semester of study. I don't know anyhow how to formulate this. I want to ask the professor if it would be possible to date my application for winter 2012 from September 30th up to March 31th. It must be actually extremly polite. Would someone help me please?

My understanding of what you've said is that the Summer semester at Berkeley (I have never heard the Univ. of Calif. at Berkeley referred to as "Berkeley Univ.") is Jun. 30 to Sept. 30, the Winter sem. from Sept. 30 to Mar. 31, and the Spring sem. from Mar. 31 to Jun. 30. You may be presently enrolled in the 2011 Summer sem., if I understand you correctly.

You want to take at least one optimization course during the upcoming Winter sem., from Sept. 30, 2011 to Mar. 31, 2012. Then during the Spring sem. from Mar. 31, 2012 to Jun. 30, 2012 you plan to write your masters thesis on Topology Optimization.

If the above is correct, then a letter to the prof. might go something like this:

Dear Professor ___,

I feel that I need to take at least one more optimization course during the Winter term at Berkeley, from Sept. 30, 2011 to Mar. 31, 2012. I believe that this will enable me to write a much better masters thesis on Topology Optimization, which I plan to complete during the Spring term, from Mar. 31, 2012 to Jun. 30, 2012.

I this is acceptable to you, I will need your approval to enroll in the Winter term and take the optimization courses that I need.

Thank you for your email. This is actually a little bit long story as follows:

I am studying Computational Engineering in France. I want to do just my MS Thesis at the chair of some professor in Univ. of Calif. at Berkley. We had an agreement. According to that I would begin my MS Thesis there at the beginning of May 2012 for the time of six months. Now I want to postpone my MS Thesis for one semester because I have decided to attend some more courses about Topology Optimization. Just as an information I will not enrolled, I will be a Scholar and he is going to be my supervisor. But I think I can reformulate your suggestion. I you have a better idea please be so kind and write me this.
