Advance vs deposit

Hi

Is there any mistakes in the usage of deposit and advance words? And do they mean the same?

"When I bought a Ferrari car, I had to pay $1500 in advance"

"When I bought a Ferrari car, I had to pay $1500 on deposit"

What I mean is that I paid $1500 as a first batch and that I'm going to pay the rest on batches.

I'm sure of the usage of "in advance" but not " on deposit"

Help please...

I would presume that they mean the same here, but I would also think that 'deposit' is money I can get back if the contract is not completed, while an 'advance' may well be gone for good.
