Adrien Brody`s acceptance speech

Hello,

Could you tell me please what is the function of the "This" in this sentence?

"I have never felt this much love and encouragement from my peers and from people I admire and from complete strangers." Does "this" mean "so"?

Can the "peers" mean colleagues here? as it is Adrien Brody`s acceptance speech for "The Pianist".

And is it possible to omit the second "from" and the third "from" too? and not to use the "and" after the "peers" and "admire"? I mean if I place commas.

Thank you
