Hello,But after the war, the British rulers adopted stickter attitude towards the Indian.What is meaning of adopted here?  One meaning that I know is "method".

'Follow' is one of the meanings of 'adopted' and it seems to fit in this context.

I'd like to add that I see it as 'chose to follow'.

Tom adopted Mary's methods.

Often, what is adopted originated with someone else.

In simple terms, if you think about it, it's a bit like adopting a child.
