Admitted to

So far no group has admitted carrying out the murder.

Is "to" after "admitted" is optional? Thanks

Admit in the sense "to confess" is a transitive verb and consequently your sentence is correct. Using the preposition to after admit when the reference is to a charge that has been brought against one is a fairly recent development: He refused to admit to stealing the car. I think this is acceptable but I know there are people who think it's incorrect English.
